Make a Planned Gift and Join The Hope and Remembrance Society
Dear Friends,
I want to share with you the very personal reason why I’m supporting HealthCare Chaplaincy through a planned gift.
My first contact with Chaplaincy was about 10 years ago at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital. I had been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and went through 6 months of chemotherapy and radiation.
I was told I was cancer free, but was monitored to make sure it didn’t reoccur. During that process they found a tumor on my kidney and I was told the kidney would have to be removed.
When I walked into Memorial Sloan-Kettering that morning, my family was there to support me, but I never felt more empty and more alone. I was numb as they prepared me for surgery.
I sat in the pre-surgical room by myself, and this small older woman walked in. She told me she was one of the chaplains at the Hospital and she sat down and asked how I was doing. She stayed and talked to me for a few minutes.
I don’t remember a word that she said, but she was there for me. She put her hand on my shoulder. We said a prayer. She blessed me and she walked out of the room.
For me those few minutes were just as important as the surgery that I was about to have and all of the chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Today’s medical profession treats your body but no one takes care of your spirit, your mind, your soul. For me as I sat there alone, having this woman come talk to me made all the difference. I knew that after talking to her that I was going to be okay. I could face anything that was ahead of me. I don’t know if it was her words, her blessings, or the hand of God. It prepared me for what I was about to face.
The chaplain who visited me that day was Sister Elaine Goodell, a HealthCare Chaplaincy clinical staff member. That experience with Sister Elaine is one of the key reasons that I am a trustee of HealthCare Chaplaincy today.
Your gift to Chaplaincy helps educate other chaplains like Sister Elaine and provide spiritual care to other health care institutions throughout the city.
A planned gift costs nothing during your lifetime. It doesn’t affect your current asset balance or cash flow. Examples of planned gifts include bequests or gifts of appreciated stock, life insurance policies, retirement plan assets, real estate and other property.
We invite you to join The Hope and Remembrance Society, either by notifying of us of a planned gift already designated for HealthCare Chaplaincy or by indicating your intention to make a planned gift. You can do that by clicking through to this form.
